Samsung 60-Nano Flash Chips

Filed under: Portable Storage — Boza at 2:14 pm on Wednesday, July 19, 2006

60-Nano Flash ChipsSamsung Electronics said Wednesday that it has begun mass producing NAND flash memory chips using the 60-nanometer process, the most delicate technology used in the industry so far.

The numbers in nanometer indicate the thickness of electric wires of the microcircuit inside the chip.

The 60-nanometer flash chip was first developed by Samsung in September 2004. It is the fifth NAND flash memory model introduced in line with the so-called Hwang’s Law

The new 60-nanometer chip has a capacity of 8 gigabits. Samsung will stack eight of the 8-gigabit chips to form one 8-gigabyte module. An 8-gigabyte flash memory module can store around 2000 MP3 songs or 225 minutes of DVD-quality video files.

Sony Blu-ray Notebook VGN-AR190G Review

Filed under: Notebooks, Computers — Boza at 10:05 am on Sunday, June 18, 2006

Sony Blu-ray Quote:
“If you’re chomping at the bit to start watching, editing, and burning HD video, the Sony VAIO VGN-AR190G delivers the goods.
If your hedging between this Blu-Ray system and the HD-DVD-enabled Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV650, the Sony gets points for its lighter, sleeker design (8.4 pounds versus 10.1 pounds), better graphics scores, and, of course, the fact that the VAIO’s Blu-ray drive can write as well as read discs. However, these advantages don’t quite justify the $500 delta between the Toshiba and Sony. “

Filed under: Robotics — Boza at 8:35 am on Saturday, June 10, 2006

Researchers from Nebraska are studying the possibility of giving a human-like sense of touch to a robot using electricity and tiny particles to allow a machine to “feel” surfaces, using nano technology; the point is that these robots can perform minimally invasive surgery.

“There is great interest in developing humanoid robots that can sense shapes, textures, and hardness and manipulate complex objects, which are not readily possible by vision alone.”

Don’t put your Mac laptop on you lap?

Filed under: Notebooks, Computers, Apple — david at 4:53 pm on Friday, May 19, 2006

MacBook Pro overheatedThe overheating on the new MacBook Pros is getting fixed quietly by an updated in the line’s firmware. However, the company apparently still doesn’t want to take any chances on users getting a little overheated while using the laptops, so they’ve included a warning in the manual (which also appears in the manual for the MBP), advising not to use their laptops on their laps? Apple’s solution to this is to recommend that customers put the laptop on a desk or other flat surface. And, not surprisingly, the word “laptop” does not appear once in the MacBook’s manual.
