Philips recalling flat-panel TVs

Filed under: Plasma TVs, Home Entertainment — Boza at 3:31 pm on Friday, March 17, 2006

Picture your self on your living room preparing to watch the news or a movie on your brand new 42″ flat-panel tv, it cost you a fortune, well you say: “It’s a little treat for myself, for all my hours of hard work.” then caos…
ATLANTA, GA, United States (UPI) — Atlanta-based Philips Consumer Electronics North America said Thursday it is recalling 11,800 plasma flat-panel TVs.

Arcing by capacitors in the left and right sides of the back cabinets of the TVs can pose a safety risk.

Philips has received nine reports of arcing by the capacitors. The results of such incidents were contained within the TVs due to the use of flame retardant materials resulting only in damage to the TV. There have been no injuries reported.

The recall involves certain 42- and 50-inch, 2005 model Philips branded Plasma Flat Panel Televisions with Ambilight technology, an ambient lighting feature that projects a soft light onto the wall behind the TV to enhance the display.

Consumers should immediately turn off the Ambilight feature and contact Philips for instructions on how to receive in-home service to have their TV repaired for free. Inquiries may be directed to Philips at 888-744-5477 option No. 4445.
